Sewing a Bag Step By Step 0

Let’s get started!

What do you need?
A short list with links to the products can be found below:

  • 0.5 m of cotton
  • 0.5 m of waterproof denim (or another waterproof fabric)
  • 8 x clamping rings (we used 25/14 mm)
  • 1 x snap hook
  • 1 x magnetic clasp
  • Disappearing fabric marker
  • 2.5 m of cord (we chose light grey, but we also offer other colours)
  • Pins
  • Tailor’s tape measure
  • Cutter
  • Thread
  • Scissors

Now, step by step, we’ll guide you through how to cut and sew the bag.

We’ll start by cutting two squares measuring 50 x 50 cm from the outer fabric (denim). To make sure your square is even, you can use a builder’s square, a piece of wood, or any object with right angles. From the cotton fabric, which will be used as the lining, cut two rectangles measuring 50 cm wide and 45 cm high. All the seam allowances have already been included in these measurements. Next, cut out a pocket measuring 20 x 23 cm.

Fold the top edge of the pocket over twice and stitch it. Place the pocket in the desired position on the lining, pinning it in place while folding in the side edges as you go (make sure not to sew the top of the pocket shut), then stitch it onto the lining.

Now we need to attach the strap (for example, to hold keys or a wallet) along with the snap hook. Slide the snap hook onto the strap and stitch it several times to secure it. Sew the strap onto the outer fabric of the bag, roughly halfway up the height (on the right side of the fabric). Then place the two outer pieces right sides together, pin, and sew.

To give our bag a structured bottom, we create a bag corner by gathering the fabric together. Align the side and bottom seams so they lie on top of each other, measure 5 cm from the corner, draw a guideline, pin, and sew along the line several times for reinforcement. Repeat the same on the other side. Trim off the excess fabric. The lining is now almost ready.

Now for the outer part of the bag. We proceed in the same way as with the lining. We place the fabric with the right sides facing each other, pin it, sew the sides and the bottom. We make the bottom of the bag in the same way as in the lining.

Attaching the magnetic clasp. On the outer part of the bag, find the centre of the width and mark a point 3 cm down from the top edge—this will be the placement for the centre of the magnet. Do the same on the other side and attach the magnetic clasps.

We now have two finished parts of the bag. Place them right sides together (insert the lining into the outer part of the bag). Pin and sew both layers together, remembering to leave a small opening. After sewing, turn the bag right side out through this opening.

Attaching the clamping rings. Start by placing the first eyelets 5 cm from the edge of the bag, then space the remaining ones 5 cm apart. Trace the outline of each ring, then carefully cut out the holes using thread cutters. Attach the rings using a hammer or pliers. This way, we’ve fitted 8 rings for the drawstring.

Cut the string into two equal pieces, thread them through the rings and tie the ends together.

The bag is ready!
